Hostwinds Review 2026: VPS, Cloud, Shared Prices and the Refund Catch

An honest Hostwinds review: shared and business prices, managed vs unmanaged VPS, hourly cloud billing, dedicated servers, the 72-hour refund rule, backups, support and data centers.

Hostwinds is one of those hosts that sells a bit of everything: shared and business hosting, managed and unmanaged VPS, hourly cloud servers and dedicated machines. In this Hostwinds review we go through what each product really costs, what the plan cards leave out, how the refund policy works (it’s much tighter than most), and who should sign up.

We didn’t run our own speed or uptime tests for this review. Everything below comes from Hostwinds’ own plan pages, Terms of Service, SLA and product docs, checked one by one. Prices checked October 2026. Some links are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Hostwinds Review: The Quick Answer

Hostwinds makes the most sense as a VPS and cloud host. Its server range is wide, you can pick managed or unmanaged, pay monthly or by the hour, and the unmanaged plans are cheap. Its shared hosting is fine but not a bargain: from $6.99/month on an annual plan, with no free domain listed. The biggest catch is the refund policy. You get 72 hours from each payment, not 30 days.

Our verdictA flexible VPS and cloud host with clear server pricing. Shared hosting is average value, and the refund window is short.

Who Is Hostwinds?

Hostwinds was founded in 2010 and is based just outside Seattle, Washington. It’s now part of HostPapa: its site footer and Terms of Service both describe it as “a HostPapa Inc. company.” The Hostwinds brand, client area and product line are still separate from HostPapa’s own hosting.

Hostwinds says it owns its hardware rather than renting it from third parties, and it has built its own Cloud Control Portal for managing servers, DNS, firewalls, snapshots, storage volumes and load balancers. That portal is a big part of why its VPS and cloud products feel more grown-up than its shared hosting.

Who Hostwinds Is Best For (and Who Should Skip It)

Hostwinds is a good fit if you:

  • Want a VPS and like the idea of choosing between managed and unmanaged on the same hardware.
  • Need servers for short jobs, tests or staging, where hourly billing saves money.
  • Have visitors in North America or Europe (Seattle, Dallas and Amsterdam cover both).
  • Want cPanel shared hosting with a dedicated IP included and free migration.

You’ll probably be happier elsewhere if you want the cheapest possible shared plan, a free domain with your hosting, or a long money-back guarantee to try things out. Hostwinds also has no data center in Asia, South America or Australia.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Managed or unmanaged VPS: the same ten server sizes, with unmanaged at roughly half the managed price.
  • Hourly cloud billing: pay only for the hours a cloud server runs.
  • Clear server pricing: every VPS and cloud size is listed with CPU, RAM, storage, bandwidth and price on one table.
  • Dedicated IP on shared plans, plus cPanel, Softaculous and free SSL.
  • Free website migration on new orders.
  • Data centers in the US and Europe (Seattle, Dallas, Amsterdam).

Cons

  • 72-hour refund window from each payment, and hourly services, domains and SSL can’t be refunded at all.
  • Shared hosting isn’t cheap: $6.99/month is the annual-plan price for the smallest plan.
  • Backups are on you: the Terms say Hostwinds doesn’t back up customer data; nightly backups are a paid add-on.
  • Older dedicated hardware: the server list is built on older Intel Xeon generations.
  • No phone line for technical help: tech support runs through tickets, and billing keeps weekday hours.

Shared and Business Hosting Plans and Prices

Hostwinds sells two lines of cPanel hosting. Shared Web Hosting is the entry level. Business Web Hosting puts fewer sites on each server, runs LiteSpeed Web Server, and gives you higher PHP memory, inode and outgoing email limits. Both come in Basic, Advanced and Ultimate tiers.

PlanWebsitesShared hostingBusiness hosting
Basic1 domain$6.99/month$11.99/month
Advanced4 domains$8.99/month$13.99/month
UltimateUnlimited$10.99/month$16.99/month

Hostwinds shared hosting plans Basic, Advanced and Ultimate with starting prices (October 2026)

Two things about these prices. First, Hostwinds’ own note on each price says it’s “only available when purchasing an Annual Plan,” so you pay a year upfront ($83.88 for Basic). Shorter terms cost more per month. Second, these are the standard annual rates, not three-year teaser prices, so you won’t face the kind of renewal jump that follows a cheap multi-year intro deal at many budget hosts. Hostwinds does reserve the right to change prices with at least 30 days’ notice.

Every shared and business plan includes:

  • Unlimited bandwidth and disk space (for website files and active email only, more below)
  • The latest cPanel with Softaculous one-click installs, WordPress included
  • Free SSL certificates and a free dedicated IP
  • Unlimited email accounts, databases, subdomains and FTP accounts
  • The Weebly drag-and-drop site builder
  • Free website migration done by Hostwinds’ team

Business plans add LiteSpeed, easy access to Cloudflare’s CDN and fewer neighbors on each server. If your site is a store or anything that earns money, the extra $5 a month on Basic is worth it. For a hobby blog, the shared plan is enough.

What’s missing is a free domain. None of the plan pages list one, so budget for registering yours separately.

What “unlimited” means here

Hostwinds’ Unlimited Hosting Policy says the disk space and bandwidth “may only be used to store and transfer files relevant to the website(s)” on the account. The Terms also rule out using shared hosting for big file storage, backup storage or download mirrors, and they allow only one cPanel backup of the same account to sit on it. If your site causes continuous server problems, you’ll be asked to upgrade. For a normal blog or business site, none of this will matter.

Hostwinds VPS: Managed vs Unmanaged

This is where Hostwinds is strongest. It sells ten Linux VPS sizes, from 1 CPU with 1 GB of RAM up to 16 CPUs with 96 GB, and each size comes as a managed or an unmanaged server. The hardware and resources are the same; what changes is who looks after the server. If you’re new to the idea, our guide to what VPS hosting is covers the basics.

SizeStorage / bandwidthUnmanaged LinuxManaged Linux
1 CPU, 1 GB RAM30 GB / 1 TB$4.99/month$10.99/month
1 CPU, 2 GB RAM50 GB / 2 TB$9.99/month$21.99/month
2 CPU, 4 GB RAM75 GB / 2 TB$18.99/month$39.99/month
4 CPU, 8 GB RAM150 GB / 3 TB$38.99/month$79.99/month

So what do you get for roughly double the price? According to Hostwinds’ tiers of support, managed servers include help with operating system updates or reinstalls, virus scans, performance troubleshooting, network issues, boot failures, hardware faults, SSH setup, DNS and firewall setup, and installing packages. With cPanel on top, support also covers email setup, 500 and 403 errors, PHP and MySQL upgrades and backup configuration.

Unmanaged servers get none of that. Hostwinds says it will make sure the server can start and has working power and networking, and “will supply no other assistance or support.” If you can patch Linux, set up a firewall and fix your own web server, unmanaged is a good deal. If those words make you nervous, pay for managed, or read our managed vs unmanaged hosting guide first. You can switch an unmanaged server to managed later from the Cloud Control Portal.

A few more details worth knowing. Every VPS gets root access, snapshots, 1 Gbps ports, SSD storage and a choice of Linux distributions, and you can upload your own ISO. cPanel/WHM is available as a template, but the license costs extra. Automated backups are an add-on at $1/month plus $0.03 per GB. Windows VPS is also available, starting at $22.99/month for a managed 1 CPU, 1 GB server.

Cloud Servers and Hourly Billing

Hostwinds’ cloud servers use the same ten sizes, but you pay by the hour. The smallest (1 CPU, 1 GB RAM, 30 GB SSD, 1 TB bandwidth) costs $0.006931/hour, which works out to about $5 if you leave it running for a whole month. The 2 CPU, 4 GB size is $0.026375/hour, roughly $19 a month.

Hourly billing is great for a staging site, a load test or a project that only runs for a few days: spin the server up, use it, delete it. Usage is billed on an invoice on the 1st of the following month and charged to your saved payment method. With no payment method on file, you have until the 3rd to pay before the services are suspended, and anything still unpaid on the 10th is terminated, data included. Keep a valid card on file.

One thing to check before you deploy: Hostwinds’ cloud page talks about “full management,” yet the hourly price matches the unmanaged VPS price almost exactly. Ask sales which support tier your cloud server gets before you rely on it. Also remember that storage you add (volumes, snapshots, object storage backups) is billed separately and keeps billing after you cancel a server until you delete it yourself. Dedicated Servers

Hostwinds’ dedicated servers are fully managed and built to order. You choose the processor, drives, RAID level, operating system, bandwidth (40 TB up to unmetered) and number of IPs. When we checked, the configurator showed $71/month for its default E3-1270 v3 build, with extras such as more drives, RAM, bandwidth and IPs priced on top.

The honest catch is the hardware age. The processor list is made up of older Intel Xeon generations (E3-1270 v3, E5-2620 v3 and similar chips that first came out years ago). They still work for plenty of jobs, but if you need modern single-core speed, a large modern VPS or a newer dedicated server elsewhere may beat them.

Refund Policy: 72 Hours, Not 30 Days

Read this part before you buy. Hostwinds doesn’t have a 30-day or 60-day money-back guarantee. Its Terms of Service say you must cancel the service in the Client Area first and then ask for a refund within 72 hours of the payment. Ask before cancelling, or after 72 hours, and the request is “considered invalid.”

How the Hostwinds refund window works

A few more rules from the Terms and refund docs:

  • Refunds are prorated, not necessarily the full amount.
  • Software licenses, domains, SSL certificates, IP addresses, anything billed hourly and anything paid in crypto can’t be refunded.
  • Only card, PayPal and Alipay payments go back to the source. Other methods get account credit, and credit is never refunded.
  • The 72-hour window also applies to renewal charges, so if an auto-renewal catches you out, act fast.
  • Cancelling is immediate and deletes the data on the service, so download a backup first.

In practice, treat any Hostwinds purchase as final after three days. If you’re unsure, start with the shortest billing term you can, or with an hourly cloud server you can delete.

Backups: Read the Fine Print

Hostwinds’ plan pages talk about “nightly backups,” but they’re an optional service, not something included by default. The Terms are blunt: “Hostwinds does not take backups of any kind of customer data, customer’s are responsible for managing and backing up their own data.” Servers use RAID to mirror disks, which protects against a failed drive, not against a hacked site or a deleted folder.

So whatever plan you choose, add the paid backup service or set up your own off-site backups (a WordPress backup plugin sending copies to cloud storage works well for most sites).

Data Centers and Uptime

Hostwinds runs out of three data centers: Seattle, Dallas and Amsterdam. It describes them as audited Tier 3+ facilities with redundant power from multiple substations, generator backup and several Tier 1 network providers. Amsterdam is the useful one for European visitors; for the US, Seattle and Dallas cover the west and the middle of the country.

The SLA promises 99.9999% network and power uptime, which Hostwinds translates to no more than 31.6 seconds of downtime a year. If it misses that, you can request an account credit by ticket for the whole day or days affected. That sounds generous, but read the scope: it covers network and power only, not your server software, and excludes scheduled or emergency maintenance. It’s a promise about the data center, not about your website being up.

Customer Support

Live chat and tickets are open 24/7, every day of the year, with no holiday closures. The sales team is also reachable around the clock, by phone at (888) 404-1279 or email. Hostwinds is upfront about the limits, though:

  • Live chat agents are frontline staff and “don’t always have the authority or technical expertise” to fix everything. Technical troubleshooting runs through tickets.
  • The billing team works Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm Pacific. Refund requests and invoice disputes need a billing ticket.
  • Tickets are answered in the order they arrive, with no promised response time.
  • Custom code, third-party software and development work aren’t supported on any plan.

That’s a sensible setup for a server host, but if you like to call someone when your site breaks, a host with 24/7 technical phone support will suit you better.

Hostwinds Alternatives

Here’s when another host might be the better call:

  • Hostinger: much cheaper shared hosting to start (from $2.99/month on a 48-month term, renewing at $10.99/month) and more data center regions.
  • InterServer: a $2.50 first month of shared hosting, then $7/month, plus a 30-day refund on web hosting and VPS slices from $3/month. Read our InterServer review.
  • Cloudways: managed cloud servers on DigitalOcean, Vultr and others from $11/month, if you want a managed server without running it yourself.
  • Vultr: unmanaged cloud servers billed by the hour, with far more locations around the world than Hostwinds’ three.

Final Verdict: Is Hostwinds Worth It?

For VPS and cloud, yes. Hostwinds gives you a clear menu of server sizes, a real choice between managed and unmanaged, hourly billing when you want it, and locations on both sides of the Atlantic. The unmanaged plans in particular are good value for anyone comfortable on the command line.

For shared hosting, it’s a maybe. The plans are solid and the prices are honest standard rates, but you can start cheaper elsewhere, and the 72-hour refund window leaves little room to change your mind. Whatever you buy, set up your own backups and keep a card on file for hourly invoices.

FAQ

Is Hostwinds a good web host?

Yes, especially for VPS and cloud servers. It offers managed and unmanaged VPS on the same hardware, hourly cloud billing and data centers in Seattle, Dallas and Amsterdam, though its shared hosting is pricier than budget rivals and refunds are limited to 72 hours.

Does Hostwinds have a money-back guarantee?

Not in the usual 30-day sense. You can get a prorated refund only if you cancel the service and request the refund within 72 hours of the payment, and domains, SSL certificates, licenses, IP addresses, hourly services and crypto payments are never refundable.

How much does Hostwinds cost?

Shared hosting starts at $6.99/month on an annual plan, business hosting at $11.99/month, unmanaged Linux VPS at $4.99/month, managed Linux VPS at $10.99/month and cloud servers at $0.006931/hour.

What’s the difference between Hostwinds managed and unmanaged VPS?

Support. Both use the same server sizes, but managed VPS includes help with the operating system, updates, network, boot and package problems, while unmanaged VPS costs about half as much and Hostwinds only keeps power and networking running.

Where are Hostwinds’ data centers?

Seattle, Dallas and Amsterdam. That covers the US and Europe well, but there are no locations in Asia, Australia or South America.

Who owns Hostwinds?

HostPapa. Hostwinds was founded in 2010 near Seattle and now describes itself as “a HostPapa Inc. company” on its website and in its Terms of Service.
